In 1991 Jim and Peg Armstrong started a series of Yarnspinng sessions at the Tullycarnet Library in Dundonald, Northern Ireland.
Yarnspinning is the name given locally to storytelling and over the years many people have entertained enthusiastic audiences in once a month sessions on a Thursday night with tall tales, witty anecdotes and stories of all kinds. In 1993 recordings were made of the Yarnspinners who performed during that season and at the end of the year this was issued as a cassette.
Unfortunately this was to be Jim’s last year and the cassette was sold in aid of the Northern Ireland Hospice, going on to raise more than £12,000. Now over 20 years since the start of the Tullycarnet Yarnspinning, the cassette has been turned into a double CD and this time proceeds will go to MacMillan Cancer Support whose nurses looked after Jim so well in his final year.
Now in her 90s, Peg still plays an active role in the Yarnspinners and the sessions continue to be a regular feature once a month from September to May at the Tullycarnet Library.
